Carnivàle [2003] 0

What promises did our ancestors fulfill and what lunacy did they survive? What historic, phantasmagorical travels did they wheedle and render throughout? …And in a breath we realize that reasons for exorcists exist within. German Expressionist-American newsreels and tarot currency pushing an otherworldly balance that is at once hyper real and not untrue. And you get to float through it all, like the pilot of the first zeppelin or the character in the head of young Bruegel the Elder.

Sacred text - on flags no less - born of the blood of a defiant nation. The dusty strings remind me of Deadwood. Counterpoints and parallels.

Who would have thought that a bunch of guys walking towards camera would make a memorable title sequence?
I guess maybe it has to be these guys and a 12fps step-printing process.

Sahara [2005] 2

Even though it was panned by critics, disowned by the original author and a box office failure, Sahara has a beautifully executed single take motion-control camera move for the opening title, that details the hero’s history and previous exploits. It also bears a striking similarity to Delicatessen’s opening montage.

Created by Framestore CFC, who also handled the films digital intermediate process.
