Correction - the slit scan was done on an animation stand, not an optical printer.

Actually this sequence was created photo-mechanically on an optical printer. It was a royal bitch of a shoot as it all had to be done in one take. The technique is called slit scan. It was shot at the now-defunct Cinema Research.

These titles were created by the creative forces at Electric Filmworks, Inc with an Apple II Plus computer.

Verhoeven specifically requested Goldsmith to "resurrect" the Conan beat for the main titles of this film. Jerry resisted at first, then gave in. After all, Verhoeven was his boss on the shoot, and he treated him better than Ridley Scott ever did!

I wouldn't say stolen. It was possibly a deliberate reference to Schwarzenegger's earlier films by composer Jerry Goldsmith.

And about the only similarity to the Superman titles is the trailing effect; which in Superman flies out from the screen in space, is a different color and typeface... Um, the style is maybe similar, but that's it.

pfff... the music is clearly stolen from Conan (Poledouris - Anvil of Crom) and the titles are very similar to that of Superman... Verhoeven stole everything. Fortunately, the movie is really good.

I think these titles are very different to the Superman sequence, but I can see where you get the idea.

One of my favorite movies. I remember being entranced by the these sci-fi titles (and Jerry Goldsmith's rousing music) in the cinema back in 1990. Great design.
