Quatermass and the Pit

The title sequence to Hammer’s Quatermass and the Pit does more to fascinate than horrify. The jigsaw skull and satisfyingly sinister score gets it right, as does the push through to the fateful gloom of Hobbs End Station.

The great John Carpenter used elements for Prince of Darkness and, perhaps, Halloween?

How can Quatermass be a ripoff of Halloween when it was done 11 years before Halloween? Two words: Chronology & Influence

Quatermass and the Pit was actually originally a 1958 serial with Andre Morell as Quatermass.

Nigel Kneale was pissed off by Val Guests casting of Brian Donlevy in The Quatermass Xperiment, and the ’57 Quatermass II movie, which btw the Quatermass 2 is professor Quatermass’s second rocket. The title of the film was also based on the second BBC serial.

The film of which these titles belong is 1967 UK release, the same year the Doctor Who serial “The Web of Fear” aired on BBC 1. In the US it was retitled “Five Million Years to Earth.”

BTW here is the Quatermass wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernard_Quatermass
