The Art of the Title Sequence

A Brief History of Title Design

Here’s a short film we put together for the opening of the SXSW “Title Design Finalists Screening” – an event that happens tonight in Austin, TX at the Vimeo theater in the convention center.

Very much looking forward to seeing our fellow jurors Jenny Lee (formally of Shadowplay Studios,) Kurt Volk (Troublemaker Studios,) Ron Pippin (Shiny Object,) and Tommy Pallotta (representing for Watch the Titles.)

+ 1 for Panic Room, very innovative title sequence

Interesting to note that it’s all movies until we get very near the end when Six Feet Under and Mad Men make an appearance. Also, is Wall·E the only end title featured?

    • Andrew Tom

No, Iron Man also had it’s end credits.

      • http://www.artofthetitle.com/ Art of the Title

Also Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes and Lemony Snicket.

  • ab

I would’ve included Bwana Devil for being a 3-D movie with (physically) 3-D titles. Also would’ve put in Panic Room for the integration of the titles with the real world.

  • Sunnysinghi

awesome bdw no 2001 and et just for respect ..no offence still awesome terrific work

  • Kshitij Goel

Nicely done. What movie, is the still which appears after The Untouchables, taken from?

    • Yonatan Doron

It’s Rosie Perez dancing during the opening credits of Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing (1989).

Excellent! Would have liked to also see Napoleon Dynamite and Survive Style 5+.

    • chris

Really great. I’d have loved to see the titles from the Brando “Island of Dr. Moreau,” too and maybe “Blow Out,” but why quibble?
      Oh, what’s the music?

      • http://www.artofthetitle.com/ Art of the Title

The Island of Dr. Moreau is actually in there. Music is RJD2 “Ghostwriter.”

        • chris

Oops. Sorry I missed it on first look. And thanks doubly!

Pablo Ferro is the man, so much great work. Your site should profile old school guys. It would help give some perspective on traditional techniques for younger artists.

Great fun! A couple images stumped me!

Wonderful stuff. Among the slightly older examples, the minimalist elegance of Bullitt, Psycho and even North By Northwest (maybe not its color scheme, though) stood out to me as remarkably modern-looking.

Wow you have woven some classic title sequences in there: the entire Alfred Hitchcock segment, “Mean Streets”, “Star Wars”, “”Do the Right Thing” and “Juno” come to mind. Titles are DEFINITELY an art form all onto their own. I feature Art of The Title on my blog because I want everyone to know how awesome and informative this is. Be Blessed!
