The Art of the Title – That’s Saul, Folks!
Psycho. Vertigo. North by Northwest. Goodfellas. Casino. You’ve seen his work, but do you know his name?
Beginning in May 2024, Art of the Title is pairing with Hot Docs Cinema in Toronto to present That's Saul, Folks!, a film series dedicated to famed graphic designer Saul Bass.
Hosted by Lola Landekic, designer, writer, and editor in chief of Art of the Title, this series will dive into the powerful imagery that Saul Bass created for some of Hollywood’s greatest filmmakers. Often called a master of title design, Bass (frequently collaborating with his wife and creative partner, Elaine) worked with directors Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, Otto Preminger, John Frankenheimer, and Billy Wilder, among others.
With expert and lively introductions, the screenings will explore and celebrate Bass’s 40-year career and the vibrant, innovative and deeply influential title sequences he created. The series is sure to be a hit among artists, designers, film aficionados and those interested in the creative arts.
On May 15, we'll screen Alfred Hitchcock's landmark film Vertigo and explore Bass's hypnotic opening sequence with spirographic images by John Whitney.
